XYZ Statements Technique

In this video, City Center's Dr. Meredith Ruden presents on how to use XYZ Statements. XYZ Statements help people effectively express their feelings with others, particularly feelings related to a specific action of another, by providing a structure: “When you do X in situation Y, I feel Z.” This structure emphasizes the use of "I" statements when sharing one's feelings, placing the focus on oneself instead of on others, thus leading to less accusation/blaming and a more productive conversation.

The Speaker-Listener Technique was developed by PREP, Inc. (www.prepinc.com).

Speaker-Listener Technique

In this video, City Center's Robert Herel, LCSW-R, presents the Speaker-Listening Technique. The Speaker-Listener Technique helps people communicate effectively by providing a structure for their conversations. The technique has individuals alternate roles as either the Speaker—the person sharing their thoughts and feelings about the issue—or the Listener—the person who is responsible for hearing the Speaker's perspective and showing the Speaker that their message was heard.

The Speaker-Listener Technique was developed by PREP, Inc. (www.prepinc.com).
