December 2020 Newsletter | Coping with the Strain of the Holidays
Holidays are usually a wonderful time for families, parties, get togethers and good fun, but this is not always the case. In the face of COVID-19, this year is especially difficult and can add to the seasonal blues and stress. Holidays can be an especially hard time for many different reasons including:
The loss of an important person in the last year
Not being able to do what we used to do in years past
Financial troubles
Inability to be with family
Painful memories of the past
Changes in our daily routine
Lack of sleep
Drinking or eating too much
But there are many steps you can take to help beat the blues and stress this holiday season:
Celebrate the holidays in a new way
Rekindle old friendships and contact someone you have not heard from for a while.
Engage in relaxing and enjoyable activities, like reading, listening to music, and Video chat with friends or family
Make a budget for your holiday spending and stick to it
Remember, the holidays are rarely as ideal as they seem on social media or television.
Build Community:
Connect with others who can truly understand your feelings and are willing to listen. Join a group with others who are experiencing similar transitions.
Express your feelings. Tell others how you are. Invite a guest to share your holiday over video.
Give food to a family in need.
Do something for someone else. Helping others can bring you a sense of fulfillment, which is what the holiday season is all about. Alter your traditions to meet your new environment.
Practicing these tips can help you cope with the strain of the holiday season. If you are having trouble coping speak with your doctor, therapist or seek help.
